Brian Stone teaches in the areas of urban environmental management and integrated land use and transportation planning. Stone received his Bachelor of Arts in English and his Master of Environmental Management from Duke University, and his Doctorate in City and Regional Planning from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Stone's program of research is focused on the spatial drivers of urban environmental phenomena, with an emphasis on air quality and climate change. Most recently, he has received a Science to Achieve Results (STAR) grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to assess the influence of "smart growth" land use strategies on future transportation and air quality. Other recent work includes analyses of urban development patterns and heat island formation, the significance of climate change to annual smog alerts, and the influence sprawling land use patterns on air and water quality in large U.S. cities.

Stone has taught in the areas of urban environmental planning, urban ecology, land use and transportation planning, and sustainable transport planning, and has instructed studio courses on transit oriented development, smart growth audits, and ecological master plans. Within the City and Regional Planning program, he is currently teaching CP 8823: Urban Environmental Planning and Design and CP 6331: Land Use and Transportation Interactions.

Prior to joining the faculty in 2005, Stone taught in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has worked as a planning consultant and served on the board of a number of non-profit organizations, including the Partnership for a Smog Free Georgia, the UW Aldo Leopold Arboretum, and the Olmsted Linear Park Alliance.
