In taking these photographs, I was interested in how the human element was built into the city center. I learned that the majority of toll takers were immigrants from Ethiopia. While sitting in the booths taking money and making change, they study English, read newspapers and religious texts, listen to the radio and talk on the phone to each other. Soon, pay-parking systems will be automated and the human element phased out.
