A series of projects on formal composition and analysis in design. Projects range from architecture
design,
to multimedia projects,
music composition, and Java 2D programming. All projects
cover different aspects of creative composition in the
arts and represent a wide spectrum of design tactics and
strategies. The formal
theory is applied mathematics, in particular group theory,
graph theory,
lattice theory and combinatorics, as well as shape grammars. The projects in formal composition represent a wide spectrum of
design projects exemplifying proportional
systems, rhythmic patterns, order and complexity, all seen within a common computational framework. The projects in contrapuntal
composition are simple pedagogical studies based on
the canonic exposition
of polyphonic
composition
by Johannes Fux. Projects in Java 2D programming
illustrate a rising complexity in design themes and programming
concepts and parallel studies
in 2-dimensional rule-based composition with concepts
from
computer graphics.
