3.2 DESIGN AND COMPUTATION elective courses

Architectonics 3.2.1 3.2.3
Grammars 3.2.2 3.2.4

A series of elective courses on the history and logic of spatial systems in architecture design

ARCH 6210: Architectonics: Symmetry, Proportion, Order
The study of architecture of form from both an historical and a mathematical perspective. The formal theory is applied mathematics, in particular group theory, graph theory, lattice theory and combinatorics. Examples of formal composition from architecture and music are presented to illustrate underlying principles regarding symmetry, proportion and arrangement.

ARCH 8553: Shape Grammars
The study of languages of design, art and architecture from a generative perspective. Various computational approaches to the generation of designs are presented with a special emphasis in shape grammars. Examples of formal composition are presented to illustrate underlying principles regarding rule-based composition from all the arts.

ARCH 8803: Hylography
A course on new developments in computer-aided design and manufacturing technologies. The class looks closely at formal compositional processes in design and investigates potential interfaces with formal manufacturing specifications including milling, incremental and reshaping processes.

ARCH 8803: Virtuality
The study of three-dimensional immersive computational environments as tools for critical descriptions of built space. The class focuses on unique aspects of representation inherent within the medium of the games engines and especially their ability to allow immersion, agency and transformation within the virtual environment.
