Members of the Search Committee
Chair of the School of Architecture Position
The College of Design
Georgia Institute of Technology
Atlanta, GA30332

Dear Members of the Search Committee,

I am applying to the position: Chair of the School of Architecture at the College of Design. My goal is to find an academic home that recognizes the moral imperative of architects to create ecologically congruent and socially inclusive built environments. Working in three world regions (North America, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East) has been instrumental in coalescing my research and teaching in service of underserved communities.

I value shared governance and have held representative positions at every institution: Georgia Tech Graduate Student Senator, University of Hawaii Faculty Senator, American University of Sharjah Faculty Senate Secretary, and Morgan State University General Education Committee Member. At Morgan, I am currently chairing both the Undergraduate Design Department and the University’s Internationalization of Education initiative. At the American University of Sharjah, I chaired the Architecture Department, a diverse community of 350 members from 80+ countries. I collaboratively developed new programs (Heritage, Museums and Middle Eastern Studies) while growing existing programs (Architecture, Interior Design and Urban Planning). I also guided the NAAB accreditation of the architecture program, the first fully accredited program outside North America. I listen deeply, communicate effectively across cultures and classes, and use technology to bring greater transparency in course scheduling, faculty and departmental assessment.

The global pandemic and the looming decline of traditional (post high school) student demographics are pushing us to simultaneously focus on supporting our current students while rethinking the character of prospective (non-traditional) students. Though technological innovations and student-centered pedagogy are making higher education accessible, that is not enough. As a first generation college student, I have personally experienced the challenges of entering and the equalizing power of completing higher education. At Morgan, I have learnt to engage the whole student and develop strategies to increase non-traditional student admission and retention rates. This includes using Scoir to proactively recruit qualified students from Title I schools, developing and implementing advising and registration calendars, using emerging technologies to identify distressed students early in the semester, and hosting open sessions with food as an anchor to build community. For architecture to lead all professions in design-thinking, we need to recruit, retain and matriculate diverse students from all classes who actively promote their Alma mater with a sense of belonging. Based on my Equity Diversity and Inclusion experience, in 2020 the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) Past President Rashida Ng, a Georgia Tech alumna, selected me to chair the ACSA Leadership Committee.

Increasing architecture’s relevancy to humanity requires questioning scholarly and design authority, and collaborating across institutions to address global challenges that are not housed within a single discipline. Experiential and service learning play a central role in the tandem urban design studios that I teach across the undergraduate architecture and graduate planning programs. Working with faculty colleagues across programs and colleges allows us to maintain a continuous presence in the topographically highest and socio-economically lowest district of Baltimore city. We build community trust, co-create deep place knowledge, and co-design projects with urban farmers to keep people and water in place. Our work is being published in two multi-authored publications as Participatory Action Research (PAR). In 2020, the Campus Compact Mid-Atlantic recognized my contribution to the Park Heights community in Baltimore through its Alan G. Penczek Service-Learning Faculty Award. In seminar courses (Design and Human Behavior), I expose students to their peers in the Middle East-North Africa region and Japan by integrating two Virtual Exchange platforms (Soliya Global Connect and the Collaborative Online International Learning - COIL). Students compare the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on distant communities and bring this knowledge to studio projects in designing socially-distant accessible public places. I have twice co-taught a course on Urban Difference and Change with Justin Garret Moore connecting Morgan students to their peers at Yale University. My faculty profile is included in the Dark Matter University.

I learned to build and hold mentoring relationships from Dr. Ronald B. Lewcock, my PhD advisor at Georgia Tech, whom I still meet regularly via zoom. I have mentored many students who reside across the world and stay in touch professionally. My former students include: Wendi Meguro, Amin Alsaden, Nasreem Altamimi, Budoor Bukhari and Monique Robinson. I have also mentored junior faculty colleagues and take pride in their successes, like Ginger Dossier who was inspired by the traditional coral buildings in the UAE and invented bio-concrete. My studios are blessed with reviewers of diverse professions, perspectives and capabilities.

As alumna, it is humbling to write this letter. Having stayed in touch with many faculty members at your College of Design, I respect the contributions and indelible marks left from the past chairs of the School of Architecture. Reading Georgia Tech’s new Strategic Plan, it is clear that the move to “inclusive innovation” offers exciting opportunities for growth. My commitment toward a respectful work environment, track-record in upholding a culture of inclusive excellence, ability to listen and gather the collective wisdom of faculty will help us prioritize initiatives that enhance a celebrated School of Architecture. As Rumi poetically stated: “a drop is an ocean only when it is in the ocean; otherwise, a drop is a drop and an ocean is an ocean.”

Please let me know if you need any additional information to support my candidacy.

Sincerely yours,
