Event will address urbanization, recession and climate change
Atlanta (June 22, 2009) — Georgia Tech will partner with with Sun Yet-sen University, a leading university of China’s booming Pearl River Delta region, to host the 9th Annual International Urban Planning and Environment Association Symposium (UPE9) in Guangzhou City, China, in August 2010.
Nancey Green Leigh and Perry Yang, professors in Georgia Tech’s City and Regional Planning Program, will co-chair the organizing committee of the event. The theme is “Sustainable Planning Challenges: Rapid Urbanization, Global Recession and Climate Change.”
The symposium will facilitiate discussion around three key areas:
Rapid Urbanization: focus on cities and regions experiencing radical urban transformation, including the Pearl River Delta region in China and Atlanta region in United States
Global Recession: focus on new urban vulnerabilities and challenges for development arising from the global financial crisis and recession. UPE9 will be one of earliest international academic events to focus on this urgent issue
Climate Change: focus on environmental consequences and implications for global cities and regions
Founded in 1994, UPE is known for being one the earliest international planning organization to focus on urban sustainability. Previous UPE conferences have been international events that have attracted hundreds of professionals, academics and policy makers from all over the world to discuss relevant and timely issues.
