1950s

George T. Heery, Sr., (Arch 1951), Chairman and CEO of the Brookwood Group, has been inducted into the Buckhead Coalition.

1970s

D. Scott Jones (Arch 1978) has returned to Georgia Tech as director of design and construction in Facilities where he will oversee design and construction management and contracting services for renovation and capital projects.

Robin L. Reinhardt, (BC 1979), of Cumberland, RI, was promoted to director of A&E services for CVS/Caremark in November.

1980s

Kenn Gardner (Arch 1980, M Arch 1983), commissioner for Wake County, NC, has been selected as the National Urban Elected Official of the Year by the National Association of Counties.  He is the first architect to be selected for the award, which includes a $5,000 Scholarship that Gardner will resent to a Wake County High School Senior. Gardner is founding principal of Isosceles Design, and architectural firm in Raleigh. He won the national honor because of his passion for helping foster care children attend college and his longstanding dedication to environmental stewardship. In 2004, Gardner created the Wake Investment Scholarship for Education Initiative, which has raised more than $100,000 for college scholarships for children in foster care.  NACo represents 3,066 counties across the nation and 50,000 locally elected county officials.  Gardner accepted the award at the organization’s national conference in Kansas City, MO, in July.  Gardner lives in Raleigh with his wife, Betty (Biology 1980), and their three daughters, Rebecca, Amelia and Hannah.

Richard Kramer (Arch 1980, M Arch 1982) has been promoted to senior associate and stockholder with Pieper O’Brien Herr Architects.  Kramer has been with the firm for more than five years and serves as director of pre-design services.  He lives in Alpharetta, GA , with his wife, Regina, and their three children, including their oldest son, Christopher (CS 2007).

Emilio Lebolo, III (Arch 1985; M Arch 1988) became Principal & Vice President
of Gallo Architects & Development Consultants, Inc. (soon to be known as GALLO-HERBERT-LEBOLO), of Deerfield Beach, FL. Lebolo is responsible for institutional projects, overseeing all graphic design and contract administration services.

Allen Lee (Arch 1988; M Arch 1997), who returned to medical school at Mercer University after earning a master’s degree from Georgia Tech, began practice as an emergency room physician in June. 

1990s

Doylelaleana Welborn Foister (BC 1993) and Ron Foister (BC 1993), who is a fifth generation builder, opened Ron Foister Custon Momes, LLC in March 2006.  Since its inception, RFCH has been featured in The Business Journal and Builder Update and has been on the cover of Triad Homes Monthly.  In May, one of Ron’s custom houses won the gold award in the 50th Annual Parade of Homes.  The Foisters live in Greensboro, NC, with children Katie Marie, 1; Lily Grace, 3; Jesse, 6; and Faith, 8. Doylelaleana is a home-school mom and the broker-in-charge of the family’s real estate company.

Steve Diamond, (ID 1999) of Hillsboro, OR, has been promoted to senior design manager of Nike Equipment at Nike Inc. Diamond will be managing and designing Global product lines, including equipment developed for Georgia Tech athletes.

2000s

Kahlillah Dotson Mosley (M Arch 2004) had her work displayed in “2% - Women of Color in Design,” an exhibit hosted by the Boston Architectural College at the American Institute of Architects’ national convention in May.  She is a staff architect with Richard Wittschiebe Hand in Atlanta.

Several recent Industrial Design alums were selected for Georgia Tech Alumni Association’s “30 Under 30” highlighting significant successes of young alumni. Among those selected were Alfredo Aponte (ID 2007), co-organizer and founder of Pecha Kucha Atlanta; Brandon Swafford (ID 2007), amateur rapper and professional record producer; Clint Zeagler (ID 2004), founder of fashion apparel company Pecan Pie Couture; Mike Fischetti (ID 2003), host of a children’s show on British Broadcasting Sytem; and Daniel Barbalho (ID 2003), co-owner and founder of t-fashion apparel company Esperanza Atlanta. IN MEMORIAM

Logan B. Dixon, Jr. (Arch 1950), of Savannah, GA, on July 21.  He retired from the Corps of Engineers after serving more than 25 years as chief of its architectural section.  Upon graduating from high school, Mr. Dixon enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Europe during World War II.  He continued his military career in the Army Reserve for 30 years, retiring as major and commander of the Green Beret Airborne Unit in Savannah.  Mr. Dixon was recognized as the leading blood donor in the Southeast, giving more than 21 gallons of blood until his health prevented him from giving any more.

Kira Michelle Alston Grimaldi (M Arch 00) of Plainfield, NJ on May 23. She was a teacher at the Nysmith School for the Gifted in Herndon, VA. She gave birth to a daughter  Maya Celina, on May 20.

Robert Henry Hall (Arch 1951), of Leesburg, GA, on May 17.  He served in England with the Air Force during World War II.

Carl Paxon “Bunky” Helfrich (Arch 1959), of Hilton Head Island, SC, on Sept. 3. Carl Paxon “Bunky” Helfrich was an architect, an accomplished yachtsman and an executive at Turner Broadcasting System Inc., noted for developed the open newsroom concept for CNN – the camera view of reporters and editors gathering news behind an anchor — which has been widely imitated. Read full obituary in Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Wilbur “Skip” Dupas Starr (M CP 1969), of Lafayetta, LA, on July 5.  In 1991, he retired as professor of architecture after 25 years at the University of Southwestern Louisiana.  He had been an assistant professor of architecture at the University of Nebraska and Georgia Tech. A seaman in the Naval Reserve, he served on active duty from 1945 to 1946 in the Pacific theater.
