Alumnus Zhya David Jacobs (M Arch 2005), a talented Chicago designer, died Tuesday, Nov. 11. He is remembered at the College of Architecture for leading a movement to incorporate digital technologies into architectural design, through his exceptional work as a student and as an assistant to Monica Ponce de Leon, former Thomas W. Ventulett III Chair in Architectural Design.

“I remember Zhya as a fun loving and inherently honest,” said classmate and friend Vikram Sami. “He was very popular in school - mainly because he was a decent fun loving human being.” Sami, a designer for Lord Aeck Sargent in Atlanta, was in design school with Jacobs beginning with undergraduate studies in India.

Sami also shared a thought from Henry David Thoreau that Jacobs shared with the world through his Web site:

"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life and see if I could not learn what it had to teach and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."

Jacobs worked at Skidmore Owings & Merrill, and had also spent time at Black Box Group focusing on Parametric digital design technology for projects like Icon Center in Dallas and Leamouth River Bridge in London. He also worked at Cooper Carry in Atlanta in the summers of 2005 and 2006.

He received a Master in Design Studies degree from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard in 2007, and a Bachelor in Architecture degree at the Academy of Arhcitecture in Mumbai, India in 1997.

As a student, Jacobs held positions of Cultural Secretary, Class Representative and Organizer of architecture conventions, and established INDIA GSD, a student group at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. His work was published in CAADRIA 2007 (Nanjing, China); Indian Architect and Builder. While at Tech he recognized with an honorable mention from the Masonry Institute. He was an Associate Member of the American Institute of Architects and member of the Indian Institute of Architects.
