Degree Title
Music Minor
Specific Objectives
Students completing a Music Minor at Georgia Tech will be trained in musical study to include
theory, history, a concentration in a specific area as vocal, or instrumental, and an introduction to
the study of music and music technology.
Admission Requirements
Students seeking admission to the Music Minor Degree Program must:
1. Be a full-time Georgia Tech student.
2. Have completed at least one semester of study at Georgia Tech or transfer from
another institution.
3. Demonstrate proficiency as a performer on a standard orchestral or band instrument,
or as a vocalist.
4. Must audition for the Music Minor Program with more than three semesters remaining
in their major degree program or before graduation.
Application
The application/audition procedure can occur no earlier than second semester of the student's first
year (see Program Director for specific deadlines). Entrance into the Music Minor Degree Program will
occur no earlier than first semester of the student's second year. The application to the Music Minor
Degree Program must include:
1. A completed Music Minor Application form. Please note the form includes a current
resume of musical activities, awards, repertoire list, and previous instructors.
2. A current transcript (unofficial).
Audition/Interview
Each applicant must complete an audition and interview before being accepted into the Music Minor
Degree Program. A portion of the interview may be completed at the time of the audition and a formal
interview with the Director of the Music Department will be required for those individuals recommended
for consideration by the Audition Committee. The audition must be completed at least one semester
prior to admittance to the program. Auditions must be scheduled with the Music Department Music Minor
Program Coordinator.
Audition Requirements
Each applicant will demonstrate proficiency by performing the materials/requirements indicated
below. Please note that for all applicants:
1.Should the audition repertoire include an accompaniment, the applicant is responsible for
securing an accompanist and performing with the accompanist at the time of the audition.
2.No photocopied music is permissible.
3.Sight-reading may be required at the audition.
Woodwind/Brass
1. A minimum of 5 chromatically adjacent major scales, two octaves (when
possible) with arpeggios, memorized.
2. Two etudes of contrasting style selected by the applicant from published literature
written specifically for the instrument to be performed OR a published solo from the standard
repertoire.
Strings
1. A minimum of 4 chromatically adjacent major scales, 3 octaves (when
possible) with arpeggios, memorized.
2. Two etudes, sonatas or concerti of contrasting styles selected by the applicant
from published literature written specifically for the instrument to be performed from the standard
repertoire.
Percussion
1. Two etudes or solos of contrasting style selected by the applicant from
published literature (written specifically for the instrument to be performed) on one or more of the
following: snare drum, keyboard, percussion, timpani, or drum-set.
Vocal
1. A minimum of 5 chromatically adjacent major scales, two octaves
(when possible) with arpeggios.
2. Performance of two art songs of contrasting styles selected by the applicant.
Jazz
1. Performance of 5 chromatically adjacent major scales, two octaves
(when possible) with arpeggios, 2 Dorian Modes, 2 Mixolydian Modes, and 2 diminished (whole/half step),
memorized.
2. Two etudes or solos of contrasting style selected by the applicant from published
literature written specifically for the instrument to be performed.
3. Improvisation to be determined by the jazz faculty.
Piano
1. A minimum of 5 chromatically adjacent major scales, two octaves (both hands) with arpeggios, memorized.
2. A minimum of 5 chromatically medodic minor scales, two octaves (both hands) with arpeggios, memorized.
3. Two etudes or solos of contrasting style selected by the applicant from published literature written specifically for the instrument to be performed.
Guitar
1. A minimum of 5 chromatically adjacent major scales, two octaves (when
possible) with arpeggios, memorized.
2. Two etudes or solos of contrasting style selected by the applicant from published
literature written specifically for the instrument to be performed.
Course Requirements
All courses must be taken on a letter grade basis and completed with a grade of "C" or better. Students must complete all courses within the Music Minor degree program with a minimum GPA of 2.0. All other requirements outlined in the Georgia Tech Policy for Undergraduate Minors must be met. Please note that courses used in a minor cannot be utilized to satisfy humanities or social science electives.

MUSI 3620 - Composers and Their Music 1800-Present
Music Theory - (4 semester hours)
MUSI 2600 - Music Theory I *
MUSI 3600 - Music Theory II
*MUSI 3000 - 4000 level courses may be substituted for MUSI 2600 with approval of the Program
Director.
Music Technology - (4 semester hours to be drawn from the following)
MUSI 3500 - Introduction of Synthesized Computer Music
MUSI 3450 - Survey of Music Technology
MUSI 4630 - Music Recording and Mixing
MUSI 4450 - Integrating Music into Multimedia
MUSI 4650 - Music and Sound Design
MUSI 4670 - Music Interface Design
MUSI 4802-A - Multimedia Performance Systems
MUSI 4802-B - The Musical Mind
Applied Instruction - (3 semester hours)
MUSI 3710, 3720, and 3730
Individual instruction by an appointed instructor designated by the
Program Director will be conducted on the applicant's major instrument or area of expertise. The
student must concentrate in one specific area for all three semesters: instrumental, vocal, or
percussion. It is preferred for the individual instruction to be taught consecutive semesters. A jury
or recital will occur at the end of each semester to evaluate student progress.
Ensemble Performance - (6 semester hours)
A minimum of 3 semesters in ONE of the following ensemble tracks must be completed
at the MUSI 3000 level or above. Therefore, a student must be enrolled in the ensemble for three
semesters during their junior and senior years. The ensemble tracks include:
Symphonic Band and/or Concert Band
Jazz Ensemble
Percussion Ensemble
Orchestra
Chorale and/or Chamber Choir and/or Men's Glee Club
Ensemble Clarification
Please note that Instrumental Chamber Ensembles do not apply to the Ensemble Performance course
curriculum requirements.
Minimum Requirements
A minimum of 18 hours is required for the Music Minor. No more than 6 semester hours of Special
Topics courses may be used towards the Music Minor. These must be approved in advance by the Program
Coordinator.
Certificate Clarification
A student who has obtained a Certificate of Fine Arts - Music from the Georgia
Institute of Technology is ineligible for the Music Minor Degree Program. A student who is currently
enrolled in the Certificate Program may opt to complete the Music Minor Degree Program so long as all
of the required coursework is completed by graduation.
Student Responsibility
Each student has final responsibility to ascertain that he or she has complied with all applicable
listed requirements/deadlines for awarding of the Minor. The Program Director assists students in
developing their degree program.

the requirements of the degree program.
