History

The Symphonic Band is comprised of 65-80 of the best musicians at Georgia Tech. These outstanding woodwind, brass, and percussion performers audition each semester and represent the Institute at prestigious events and music conferences. The ensemble performs at the highest level of musical performance by performing some of the finest wind band literature.

To hi-light the ensemble's musical accomplishments, the Symphonic Band performed for the College Band Directors' National Association/National Band Association Southern Division Conference in February of 2002 at the Clayton County Performing Arts Center in Atlanta. Compositions written specifically for the ensemble by Tom Bahler, Brian Balmages, Aldo Forte, and student composer, Seyed Safavynia were premiered at the Conference. In addition, a premiere arrangement of the third movement from E. Bozza's Clarinet Concerto featured Max Kleinsteuber, former clarinetist of the New England Philharmonic.

In the Spring of 2001, the ensemble performed a collaborative concert with the Dublin Institute of Technology's Wind Ensemble in Dublin, Ireland. In spring of 1999, the ensemble released their first CD entitled In Concert! featuring works by Copland and Hindemith. In January of 1995, the ensemble was invited to perform for the Georgia Music Educators' Association annual conference featuring Allen Vizzutti, renowned trumpet soloist. Guest ensembles of the Symphonic Band have included the Army Ground Forces Band from Fort McPherson, GA, and the Cobb Wind Symphony. Guest conductors have included Maestro Fulvio Creux, commander of the Army Band in Rome, Italy.
