Frequently Asked Questions

THE GEORGIA TECH MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Among the oldest traditions of the Institute, the Music Department provides a fun, creative, stress-relieving, cultural outlet for Tech's many musically minded students. Whether your interest is casual or intense, the music faculty is dedicated to providing a quality experience in the theory, history and practice of music. Participants enjoy a sense of community and the pride and confidence that come from musical disciplines and accomplishments. Institute research also reveals that student retention is 4.5 times greater for students involved in music.

DON'T LET YOUR TALENT GO TO WASTE!!

Your investment in music, of time, self and financial resources, can really pay off here at Tech! Over 800 students each semester continue to explore and develop creative and artistic skills through rewarding participation in credit bearing musical ensembles and classes. The choices are as diverse as the student body and include Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, MIDI Ensemble, Chorale, Chamber Choir and Men's Glee Club, as well as a number of chamber woodwind, brass and string ensembles. Classes in Music History, Theory, and Music Technology add even more interest to your investment.

IS THERE MUSIC AT GEORGIA TECH?

YES - there are plenty of instrumental and choral activities for students to get involved in . . . and engineers make great musicians!!

IS THERE ENOUGH TIME TO STUDY AND BE IN AN ENSEMBLE?

Although Tech students typically have full schedules, they always seem to find time for rehearsals. In the combined activity of rehearsals and concerts, students enjoy a well-deserved break from study, a social activity and personally rewarding growth.

WHO ELSE WILL BE THERE?

You'll meet a great number of other students in the Department's thriving ensembles, representing a complete list of the majors on campus at the undergraduate and graduate levels. These are inclusive, not exclusive ensembles and activities. If you don't know anyone on campus, this is a great place to meet the cream of the crop. Surveys demonstrate that music students have higher GPA's than the general student body. These are people you ought to know!

SHOULD I WAIT?

Some students decide to wait "until they get their feet on the ground" before becoming involved. Many will become involved in other social activities instead and never come back to music. They then miss the very supportive elements that make a successful academic career: diverse experiences, positive social interactions and confidence building through team and individual effort. The proof is in the research: music students do better in school!

IF I HAVE A CONFLICT WITH ENSEMBLE REHEARSAL AND ANOTHER CLASS, WHAT DO I DO?

If you have tried everything to avoid a conflict with an ensemble rehearsal, but cannot find a way around your scheduling problem, contact the ensemble director as soon as possible. In many cases, these conflicts can be worked out.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

Costs to participate in any of the ensembles are nominal.

  • First year Marching Band - approximately $150. The Athletic Association covers travel expenses to performances. (They even provide per diem to buy meals.)

  • Instrumental rental is $20 per semester.

  • Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Orchestra require a black tux for men and black dress for women. Jazz Ensemble requires a black shirt or blouse and black pants or skirt. Choral groups require a black tux for men and uniform dress for women.

WHEN ARE AUDITIONS?

Auditions for Marching Band are held during band camp (the week before fall semester classes begin). Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble auditions are held during the first day or two of classes. Contact the director for more information.  Fall 2003 instrumental audition information is now available.
