Jazz Ensemble Requirements
Find and prepare two contrasting excerpts from any jazz study or play
along book in a swing style, funk style and/or ballad style. These may be
from a Jamie Aebersold jazz play along book (and CD if you wish to
demonstrate your improvisatory skill) or anything similar written in a
jazz style. Indicative parts from jazz ensemble arrangements are also
acceptable. Play these along with three, two octave MAJOR scales that are
chromatically adjacent (such as C, C# and D major scales). Follow each of
these with a two octave arpeggio. There is no sight-reading requirement.
Orchestra Requirements: Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion, Strings,
Harp and Piano
Student must perform two significant orchestral passages, concerto or
etude excerpts (each at least 2-3 minutes in length, either portions of a
single work or two separate works). One should demonstrate
technique. The second should demonstrate musicality. Play 3 major scales (chromatically
adjacent, two octaves with arpeggios, except for strings, who should play
three octave arpeggios if possible). There is no sight-reading
requirement.
Symphonic Band and Concert Band Auditions
Auditions for the Symphonic Band are held during the
first class meeting. Concert Band auditions are held during the second
class meeting. If you are unable to
attend an audition at that time, please contact the ensemble director as soon as possible to make other arrangements.
Symphonic Band / Concert Band Requirements
Students must perform the following:
-
Five chromatically adjacent major scales, two octaves
-
A chromatic scale the full range of your instrument
and/or ability
-
Sight reading
-
A prepared etude (Symphonic Band only)

Dr. Andrea Strauss by email or at (404)894-8974.
