Georgia Tech Re-Creates Peachtree Corridor in 3D Virtual Environment ATLANTA (June 29, 2010)—The Georgia Tech Imagine Lab at the College of Architecture today announced the public release of an interactive, virtual environment of Atlanta’s famed Peachtree Street that allows users to explore the 22-mile corridor on a computer. Users can download the environment at http://www.coa.gatech.edu/imagine/PeachtreeCorridor.html at no cost, and travel up and down the corridor using a mouse and keyboard, similar to other tools like Google Earth. Originally commissioned by the Peachtree Corridor Taskforce as a tool for planning and collaboration, the environment illustrates a long-range vision for making the street more pedestrian-friendly, with wider sidewalks, more public space and a modern-day streetcar. The Imagine Lab also created seven digital animations showing movement along the corridor. These can be accessed for Web or television content by contacting the Imagine Lab. “We think real estate developers, designers, planners and even residents could benefit from the ability to navigate a future Peachtree Street,” said Lab director Anatoliusz “Tolek” Lesniewski. “Just as the Peachtree Corridor Taskforce used the environment to facilitate meetings and generate ideas, it may be a valuable tool for collaborating and making decisions on other Peachtree Street projects.” The Imagine Lab specializes in creating large-scale virtual environments and adding collaborative features to them, where multiple users can conduct live, interactive training or meetings. Researchers there take descriptive or numerical data and make it visual in the form of map layers that can be turned on and off, or filtered. This public release of the Peachtree Corridor environment is the first of others, with Georgia Tech’s 400-acre Atlanta campus slated to become available in the fall. About the Georgia Tech Imagine Lab The Imagine Lab is housed within Georgia Tech’s College of Architecture. It creates virtual, interactive environments to facilitate complex planning and communication for Georgia Tech researchers and collaborators. It is a key component to the Georgia Tech Digital Building Lab, which collaborates with corporate and government entities on building research ranging from conceptualization and design to fabrication and project management. |
