As the Industrial Design program is small and the required courses that the ID students take are regimented, students within the major will be given priority in permit and overload requests.
Though granted by the advisor, permits and overload requests are ultimately the decision of the course instructor. Please be aware of this and take this in consideration when judging the length of time between your request and the decision on the request.
The vast majority of requests from outside our major come for either Art History or Industrial Design History. These courses fulfill a humanities requirement for Georgia Tech students.
The number of students in either series of courses (COA 2241 Art History I, COA 2242 Art History II, or ID 2202 Industrial Design History) is absolutely limited to no more than 200 in each course.
There are usually two sections of each course in a given semester. One of the sections is for Industrial design students only. It is marked as such and if a student is not an industrial design major he or she will be unable to register for the section in OSCAR. The open section (which is usually section “A”) is indeed open for all students with sophomore standing or higher.
No permits will be granted for a non-ID student to register for the ID section. These courses are required for the Industrial Design curriculum.
No overloads can be granted for the larger sections of the courses.
If diligent, there will be opportunities to add the courses to your schedule as the phases of registration advance, as space becomes available.
