Desired qualifications

Students with an undergraduate major in industrial design, as well as students from allied fields of design, are potential graduate candidates for the MID degree at Georgia Tech. Students from backgrounds such as engineering and computer science, who demonstrate aptitude for the profession of industrial design will be accepted on a conditional basis, and are required to complete a preliminary curriculum of undergraduate studio classes as well as a review process by the graduate faculty.

The minimum length of study is variable depending upon the development of courses and research interests. Applicants will be reviewed on an individual basis each year by evaluating grades, a prior undergraduate curriculum completion, professional experience if any, and statement of intent demonstrating a clear vision of the individual's match of capabilities to the demands of the program and eventual professional practice in design professions. Where there is a lack of studio-based design education, these subject areas will be made up through a conditional admission requiring prerequisite course work. Approvals for thesis and non-thesis tracks must be approved by faculty before graduate students begin those tracks.

International applicants from countries in which English is not the native language must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a minimum score of 550.
