Proposed Program of Study

MS/Arch with a concentration in Urban Design

The proposed MSUD will be a post-professional, three-semester full-time day program, beginning in the fall and continuing through spring and summer semesters. The objective is to provide students with the theoretical, technical, and practical knowledge that they need to be leaders in urban design practices locally, nationally, and internationally.


The curriculum structure includes four parts as follows.

Urban Design Studios and Workshops 18 credits
Urban Design Core Studios 9 credits
Urban Design Cluster Electives 6 credits
Professional Electives 9 credits
Total Credits Required 42 credits


Required Urban Design Studios and Workshops:
18 credit hours required

  • ARCH XXXX: Urban Design Fundamentals Studio – 6 credits
  • ARCH XXXX: Advanced Urban Design Studio– 6 credits
  • ARCH 7045: Urban Design Workshop - 6 credits

Required Urban Design Core Seminars:
9 credit hours required

  • ARCH 4051: History of Urban Form – 3 credits
  • ARCH 6151: Theories of Urban Design – 3 credits
  • CP 6834: Urban Design Policy, Analysis and Implementation – 3 credits

Required Elective Clusters:
6 credit hours required in one of three clusters

  • Sustainability

Professional Electives: 9 credit hours required with courses to be approved by the student’s advisor. These electives will be oriented toward expanding the students professional knowledge outside his or her own field to build professional and research methods and knowledge. These electives will be selected from both inside the College, within the Institute, and Georgia State University via cross enrollment.
