The Graduate City Planning Program prepares students to function as professionals who are capable of understanding and resolving planning problems in depth. To enable students to focus their education on a consistent and cumulative body of knowledge, the Program offers the following seven specializations:
Economic Development | Environmental Planning and Management | Geographic Information Systems | | Land Use Planning | Transportation | Urban Design
Land Development The
distribution and form of social and economic activities in American
cities is significantly shaped by private market forces. This
specialization focuses on the real estate market and its role in shaping
urban growth. Specific areas of concern are real estate markets
for new construction, the relation of new construction to the existing
stock, and the redevelopment and preservation of existing stock. It
examines the impact of development and redevelopment processes on the
geographic, class, racial, and ethnic distribution of residential, commercial,
and industrial structures. It places emphasis on the continually changing
relationship of local, state, and federal policy for development and
redevelopment. The Land Development specialization requires two foundation courses and permits selection of two additional courses from a range of alternatives offered by the City and Regional Planning Program, the Real Estate Program at Georgia State University, and the Emory University Law School. The two foundation
courses are:
Students in this specialization may also be interested in a graduate certificate program in real estate offered at Georgia State University, designed especially for Georgia Tech City and Regional Planning students. (See Joint Degrees & Certificates)
