Incoming Student Information

Now that you've been admitted to Georgia Tech

Motor vehicle registration is vital!  Parking decals have a tendency to sell out early, and these are mandatory if you plan to have a car on campus and/or drive to campus. The deadline for decal registration for the 2006-2007 academic year is June 30, 2006.   However, parking expects that "no one with late parking registration will get an assigned parking spot."  You can visit www.parking.gatech.edu for updates on deadlines and for further details regarding parking on campus.

Oscar Web   (Course Offerings by Semester, Official School Calendar, Registration Calendar, Fee Payment Policies, etc.)

To access registration on OSCAR you'll need a User ID & PIN number.  The User ID is your new GT ID#.   It would be something like 901######.  It is NOT your social security number.  If you need to look up your GT ID#, go to http://www.gtid.gatech.edu.  The first time you go into OSCAR you will need to use your birthdate in mmddyy format (no dashes or slashes) as your password.  You can subsequently change it to a password of your choice.

Fall Schedule can be accessed through the Registrar's Office or through the secured access login in OSCAR.

First-year students have 3 required courses for a total of 10 credit hours:

  • CP6002C Intro to Fields of Planning (2 credits)
  • CP6012(C or E) History & Theory of Planning (4 credits) Section Assigned by Permit Only)
  • CP6019C Quantitative & Computer Methods (3 credits - lecture) + CP8900LAB (1 credit - Quantitative & Computer Methods Lab)

To constitute a full courseload (12+ credit hours) you will need to register for one more course of your choosing.

You can register for any course EXCEPT:  CP6052XX (Planning Studio) or CP8990 Applied Research Paper, which are for second-year students only.

We recommend but do not require that you take CP6514 Intro to GIS sometime while you are here.  It is offered every semester and is restricted by permit.  If you would like to take this course please complete a permit request form (on Dot Matthews' door - Room 204 Arch East) and submit it to Dot Matthews.  She will enter the permit so that you can then register for the course.  There is much interest in this class outside of CRP, so please submit your request BEFORE Aug. 15th when Phase III registration begins.

Health Insurance

You can view the rates and benefits for 2006-2007 online at the Pearce and Pearce website at http://www.studentinsurance.com.   Choose Georgia Institute of Technology on the pulldown box on the lefthand side.  Then choose one of two links, depending upon whether or not you are a GRA.

If you are NOT a GRA, go to online enrollment  for "graduate and undergraduate students;" and if ARE a GRA (program-, sponsored- or GRA/Co-op) choose "Eligible GRA/GTA/GSA Students."

Georgia Tech subsidizes the insurance premiums for GRA's, which is why there is a separate listing for GRA's.  Please note that the Health Center's contract with Pearce & Pearce has an entry for 2005-2006.  This policy is renegotiated every year around the beginning of August. When available the new policy and rates are posted on the website and all students will be notified.

Please note that if you are a Graduate Research Assistant or Graduate Research Assistant, Supplemental health insurance for U.S. citizens and permanent residents is required.  It is intended to supplement the care available from the student health services at Georgia Tech.   If you are not a Program GA or externally funded GRA, you are not required to purchase supplemental health insurance.

International students have mandatory health insurance.  For more information go here.

Public Transportation

City (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority)

Around Campus:

Stinger vans and Tech Trolleys continually circumvent the campus during regular working hours and one route goes to the Midtown MARTA station.  Cost is covered by student transportation fee, so there is no charge and no ID necessary to ride the stinger.

Stingerette is an after-hours transportation service so that you don't have to walk around campus at night.  It is available free of charge on an as-needed basis.
