TONY GIARRUSSO, M.C.P
Anthony Giarrusso is a Research Scientist at the Center for Geographic Information Systems at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia. His teaching, research and consulting activities are primarily in the areas of land conservation planning, creation of customized GIS tools and the protection of natural resources. Mr. Giarrusso’s work has recently shifted towards the utilization of GIS to better understand the connections between public health and land use.
Mr. Giarrusso’s main research agenda has focused on the development of GIS based greenspace planning tools for local governments and non-profit land trusts/foundations. Mr. Giarrusso has also been involved in creating customized software tools to help GIS users better understand and utilize digital wetland data in the state of Georgia. Mr. Giarrusso also provides technical support to various non-profits across Georgia. Recently, Mr. Giarrusso completed a study using GIS to analyze the relationship between the demographics and built environment surrounding Georgia’s public schools and how these variables influence the potential for students to walk to school.
Apart from his research activities, Mr. Giarrusso has been an instructor at Georgia Tech over the last four years. He has taught an introductory GIS class to undergraduates.
Mr. Giarrusso received his Masters degree in City Planning from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2000. Between 1993-1998 he served as an aquaculture extension agent in rural Africa with the Peace Corps. Prior to the Peace Corps he received his B.S. in Biology from Georgia State University. Mr. Giarrusso has been a lifelong resident of Atlanta.
