Georgia is a rapidly developing and urbanizing state. Resource agencies and planning organizations would benefit greatly from easily accessible digital information on the location of wetlands. Researchers from the Georgia GIS Data Clearinghouse and the Center for GIS are currently working on the development of a shared statewide digital wetland database and associated GIS tools that will aid planners and resource managers at DNR, DCA,DOT, and other organizations in the protection and management of Georgia's wetlands resources.

This project will improve access to the digital wetland data, allowing both public and private agencies easy access to the digital wetland data. The integration of digital wetland data into state planning programs will be helpful in minimizing impacts to wetlands. Improved digital wetland data will also open the door to amore effective wetlands protection program at regional, state, and local scales as the benefits of GIS technologies are realized by management organizations.
