BC Student Receives Prestigious Research Award

Atlanta (March 31, 2009) — BC Student Shannon Barnes has been selected by the College of Architecture as this year’s Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher in the college. Ms. Barnes’ will present her research entitled “BIM-Enabled Integrated Optimization Tool for LEED Decisions” at the Georgia Tech Undergraduate Research Spring Symposium on April 1, 2009. She will be presented with the award, which includes a monetary stipend and certificate at the reception following the symposium.

Ms. Barnes’ research was conducted under the direction of Dr. Daniel Castro, Associate Professor of Building Construction. Selections for the award were based on research work of high quality and demonstration of leadership on the project.

Ms. Barnes is a senior majoring in Building Construction and is President of the Student Construction Association. She is also a LEED Accredited Professional, a designation which distinguishes building professionals with the knowledge and skills to successfully steward the LEED certification process. LEED Accredited Professionals (LEED APs) have demonstrated a thorough understanding of green building practices and principles and the LEED Rating System.

Ms. Barnes was presented with the Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award at the awards ceremony following the symposium April 1. The Student Advisory Board for Undergraduate Research (SABUR) hosts a reception honoring the awardees from each college and the winners of the poster and oral competitions at the Spring Symposium. SABUR also honors others on campus who have been supportive of undergraduate research.
