Incomplete Grades

According to the Rules & Regulations V3, a student may be assigned a grade of “I” (Incomplete) under the following circumstance:

“Assigned when a student was doing satisfactory work, but for non-academic reasons beyond his/her control and deemed acceptable by the instructor, was unable to meet the full requirements of the course. If the student's performance was so poor as to preclude his/her passing, the instructor shall assign the grade of F".

The student should be able to provide documentation to the instructor for any non-academic reason.  The emphasis is on the fact that the reason is not academic in nature and that the student was doing satisfactory work. Students should not be instructed to sign up for the course again in order to make up an “I” grade.

Students should only lack a small portion of course work.  If the student is missing so much work that a passing grade could not have been assigned, a grade of “F” should be assigned.

When completing a grade correction form to remove the “I” grade, the instructor is required to identify the nonacademic reason that the “I” was given, not what the student was required to do to make up the work.

**If a grade of “I” (Incomplete) is assigned in a “prerequisite” course, the course must be completed and a grade change form submitted by the instructor no later than the day before the end of Phase II (final) registration, or what was is commonly referred to as the last day to “add or drop” a course, to be granted permission to enroll in a subsequent course that requires satisfactory completion of the prerequisite.

**If a grade of “I”(Incomplete) is assigned in a “non-prerequisite” course, the Incomplete must be removed and the grade change reported by the end of the student's next term in residence or, if the student has not been enrolled, by the end of the term one calendar year from the date the Incomplete was assigned.

Failing to remove the “I” in the allotted time will result in the “I” being changed to the grade of “F”. To remove the Incomplete, the student should consult with the instructor as soon as possible after the term is over and complete whatever remaining work is outlined by the instructor. Repeating the course for credit does not remove the grade of “I”.

Students who receive a grade of "I" (Incomplete) should consult the Student Rules & Regulations VII.
