George B. Johnston is Associate Professor in the College of Architecture at Georgia Institute of Technology where he has been a member of the faculty since 1984. He currently teaches courses in architectural design and in the history and theory of architectural practice.

Johnston's over-arching scholarly interest lies in the social, historical, and cultural implications of making architecture in the American context. This interest informs his pedagogical approach to design and design methodology through a focus upon the order of construction as a narrative framework for the architect's analogical construction of designs. He has published and presented numerous papers at scholarly conferences on topics related to design pedagogy, issues of technology and representation, and the culture of architectural professionalism. Johnston's design work has been honored with citations of excellence from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, and work from his studio has been exhibited in the Architecture section at the Venice Biennale. Johnston served for eight years as Associate Director of the Architecture Program and for two years as national secretary of the organization of architectural educators, the ACSA.

Johnston received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from Mississippi State University in 1979, the Master of Architecture degree from Rice University in 1984, and is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in the Graduate Institute of the Liberal Arts at Emory University in the area of American Cultural Studies. Johnston is a registered architect and has practiced in firms in Mississippi, Texas, and Georgia.
