Edwin Akins

Ed Akins is a part-time instructor at Georgia Institute of Technology. He teaches architectural design studios and an elective seminar which highlights his commitment to environmental design issues as they pertain to ethics within the architectural profession.

Ed Akins works within the community and the AIA to promote and cultivate awareness of the issues he has focused upon in academia. His work with communities has resulted in master-plan funding and infrastructural improvements for underserved Atlanta neighborhoods, as well as being an outspoken leader for these groups. Within the AIA, Ed was awarded a National AIA award for his work with the Young Architects Forum in Atlanta. He continues to assist Emerging Professionals as the South Atlantic Regional Liaison for the Young Architects Forum.

He has worked also with design, staging, and volunteer coordination for large scale events including the Atlanta Olympic Ceremonies in 1996 and the Hong Kong Handover in 1997.

He received his Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1994 and a Master of Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1996. He has worked in the offices of Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback, and Associates [Atlanta]; and Smith Dalia Architects [Atlanta]. He is currently finishing CD's on an EarthCraft Multi-Family project in Chattanooga, TN and permitting an environmentally sensitive loft renovation within an early 1900's Mill building in SE Atlanta for his home.

Ed intends to continue working within the eco-residential area of Architectural practice and exploring the beneficial collaborations that can result in lasting positive impacts upon our environment.
