Atlanta (June 22, 2009) — The College of Architecture at Georgia Tech announced Chris Jarrett, associate director of the architecture program, will join the University of North Carolina-Charlotte (UNCC) as director of the School of Architecture in the College of Arts and Architecture.
Jarrett has served as Associate Director for the past seven years, with the exception of serving as Acting Director in 2006-2007. He was appointed by the Georgia Tech Office of the Provost for the “University Leadership Program Fellows” for 2008-2009, has significant international teaching and program directorship experience as well as years of studio teaching and research experience.
He first offered his “Eco-Tectonics” and “Contemporary Urban Ecologies” courses in 1995, leading the College and preceding most other architecture schools in the ever-more urgent discussions of sustainability. He was the principal investigator in Georgia Tech’s entry for the United States Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Competition. With Jarret’s leadership in research, cross-disciplinary integration and external funding, it garnered an Innovation Award while securing sixth place overall.
Jarrett played a key role in the establishment of many Georgia Tech initiatives, including the interdisciplinary Center for Biologically Inspired Design and the International Plan option for undergraduates.
He is very well respected among his peers for his gift for teaching. His students have won over twenty international and national design competitions in the last 15 years, and he himself won the College’s Outstanding Teacher award in 1998.
“[Chris] will be greatly, greatly missed,” said colleague Ellen Dunham-Jones, who served as director of the Architecture Program during Chris’ tenure as associate director. “UNCC will no doubt benefit from his tireless energy and commitment to administering and shaping architectural education.”
Jarrett will be the first director of the School of Architecture at UNCC, which was created in 2008 with the new College of Arts + Architecture.
