ARCH 6153: History and Theory of the Modern City.
(3 Credits – Letter Grade Only)

This course is conducted with lectures, seminars, site visits, and discussions at Georgia Tech and in each of the three locations, as well as the short trip to Copenhagen. It will be organized around a reader, which all students will carry and read during the travel period. Requirements are as follows: First is an illustrated essay of 2000 words, ready for web-based publication, on a topic of modern/contemporary urbanism that examines all three locations in a manner that only direct personal experience could provide. The essay will be supported by bibliographic references in sidebars. Second is a journal and sketch book, recording analyses of project visits.

ARCH 6155: Contemporary Architecture/Urbanism in Europe.
(3 Credits – Pass/Fail)

This course is an examination of significant examples of contemporary architecture, landscape architecture and urbanism in Europe within the 4 cities and regions to be visited. The course will also include visits, including lectures, to architecture/landscape/planning offices and guided visits to construction sites accompanied by project designers, where possible. The course will be supported by a reader, assembled from current journals and internet resources, with background materials on the buildings to be visited and essays by the architects. Each student will document a minimum of six contemporary buildings or places that have not been widely published in the U.S. Each student will also keep a journal/sketchbook recording visits to all buildings and projects.

ARCH 4123: European Modernism.
