Arch 4415 Photography I

Elective Course

Credits: 3-0-3 (3 semester hours)

Type of Course: Lecture/ Studio

Instructors: Ruth Dusseault

Prerequisites: None

Course Overview: The purpose of this class is to introduce students to photography as a means of personal expression and to learn how that experience is applied in the creative processes of the designer.

Students will have access to a black and white chemical darkroom, where they will develop film and make prints by hand. They need no prior experience in the use of the camera or the darkroom.

Students will also be taught studio and lighting and techniques for documenting their architectural artwork and models. They will learn the technical skills necessary to make photographs, but it is also the goal of this course to develop overall visual literacy through the practice of making and talking about art.

One third of the course will consist of technical demonstration; one third will involve studio time, class critique and personal instruction; and one third will consist of photo history presentations and field trips. As a studio course, the projects will to a large extent determine grades. At the end of the semester, students will have a portfolio of fifteen images for a final critique. It is the goal of the course for students to master the medium enough to develop their ideas into an original visual statement.
