Course Overview
This course introduces the student to Renaissance Architecture in the 15th and 16th centuries in Italy. Both the constructed works and the principal writings will be studied in order to understand the reasons for the revival of Classical interest in this period.
Learning Objectives
Each student will be required to accomplish a formal research project:
A research paper addressing an issue related to the Renaissance in Italy will be the focus of independent research. Your results will be presented in a formal paper of minimum 10 double spaced typed pages in length plus illustrations. This is a formal paper with footnotes and bibliography. The schedule for the research paper is as follows:
- January 25 topic of the paper is due
- Feb 1 turn in bibliography
- Feb 17 turn in developed outline
- March 24 turn in preliminary draft that has been thoroughly edited
- The paper with comments will be returned to you by March 31.
- April 12 turn in final paper
Course Requirements
Examinations: The quiz and final will include information from readings, lectures and will be both discussion questions and questions related to slide identification/comparison.
The course grade will be determined as follows:
- Class participation - 10% (includes attendance and participation; 2 absences allowed after which this portion of the grade is forfeited)
- Quiz #1 - 25%
- Final - 30%
- Research Paper - 35%
