Building a Legacy: The Architecture Program's Centennial

The Architecture Program is celebrating a century of architectural education with a series of great events scheduled for the 2008-2009 academic year.

The Centennial will highlight the outstanding contributions of Georgia Tech architects in Atlanta and around the world in the hundred years since the first architecture students matriculated in 1908. Our graduates created the skyscrapers that dominate Atlanta's skyline, innovative new developments like Atlantic Station, the memorial being constructed at Ground Zero, and a million things in between. Our year-long celebration will offer alumni and friends lots of opportunities to explore our history and re-connect with the Program and each other.

2008-2009 Schedule of Events

  • Lecture Series - Our traditional Portman Lecture Series will feature several of the Program's famed alumni. Who better to kick off the series than its namesake, Mr. John Portman, Jr.? The noted Atlanta designer will speak at the College of Architecture Auditorium at 6:00 PM, August 27th, 2008. Click here to access the full schedule of centennial year lectures.
  • Homecoming Events - Two exciting events are scheduled for Friday, October 24, 2008. From 10:30-11:45 join us for an interactive seminar called "The Untold Story of Architectural Education at Georgia Tech" in the GLC building (registration required). Then meet the new Dean of the College, Alan Balfour, at Ecco at 4:30 p.m.
  • Exhibits - "A Century of Architectural Education at Georgia Tech" is a three-part exhibit on the history of the Architecture Program (and its predecessors) featuring the best examples of student and faculty design work from three eras. This outstanding exhibibit has been professor Elizabeth Dowling and graduate student Lisa Thomason, and features numerous artifacts and drawings. Part I, covering the period from 1908 to 1940, is on display now, and the second part will open November 5th.
  • College of Architecture Research Forum: Dr. Robert C. Craig will present "A Scholar's Response to the Architecture Centennial" on Thursday, January 29, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm in the Architecture Library, COA building.
  • Centennial Weekend Celebration 24- 25 April, 2009. On the 25th, we will host a gala event, "creative black tie" after the fashion of the legendary 1931 Beaux Arts Ball in New York City (see photo at right).
