What are the differences between the graduate degree programs in Architecture at Georgia Tech?

Graduate Studies in Architecture at Georgia Tech are comprised of two distinct degree-granting programs: the Master of Architecture I (M.Arch I) and the Master of Science (M.S.).

The M.Arch I Program is the professional Program in architecture leading to the NAAB-accredited Master of Architecture Degree.  This program accommodates a 2-year long curriculum for students who hold a 4-year, pre-professional degree in architecture and a
3 ½ -year long curriculum for students who hold an undergraduate degree in a field other than architecture.

The M.S. Program is a post-professional program in advanced architectural studies and is oriented toward advanced practices, scholarship and research.

How do I apply to the graduate program in architecture?

Go to www.gradadmiss.gatech.edu and click on the “Apply to Ga Tech” link.
The following materials are required:  1) Application; 2) Application Fee; 3) Three letters of recommendation; 4) Statement of Purpose; 5) two official copies of the transcript from each college attended since high school; 6) official scores of the Graduate Record Examination (G.R.E.); and 7) a portfolio.  Information pertaining to the portfolio requirements can be found on the graduate admissions web page.  All materials should be submitted directly to the Graduate Admissions Office except for the portfolio.  The portfolio must be mailed directly to the Admissions Coordinator, Architecture Program Office, Georgia Institute of Technology, 247 4th Street, Atlanta, GA 30332-0155.

If you are a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident and you wish to claim Georgia Residence for tuition purposes, you must complete the Application for Georgia Residence Status form (included with the on-line application).

In addition to the above requirements, international students are required to submit official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (T.O.E.F.L.), and proof of financial support for the first year of study.

When are applications due?

All application materials must be submitted along with the $50.00 filing fee not before October 15 but not later than January 15 in the year preceding enrollment.

Are there minimums for my standardized testing scores?

The Architecture Program does not set minimums for the G.R.E. test, but the average among our students is relatively high.  Admission to graduate study by the Architecture Program is competitive and based upon merit as evidenced in the applicant’s previous academic performance, G.R.E. and/or T.O.E.F.L. scores, portfolio, and other supporting documentation.

The Architecture Program requires a minimum T.O.E.F.L. score of 600 (paper-based) or 250 (computer-based).  This requirement exceeds that of the Institute.  International students must meet the Architecture program minimum to be considered for admission to graduate studies in architecture.

Can I apply for Spring or Fall admission?

Applicants to the 3 ½ year M.Arch I Program must apply for summer admission.  The 2-year Program applicants must apply for fall admission.  No applications will be considered for spring admission.

If I am accepted and cannot come, can I defer?

Applicants from the previous academic year wishing to reapply should submit a new portfolio along with a letter of intent for reapplication to the Architecture Program Office.  If you defer for more than one year, you must submit a new complete application on-line with Georgia Tech.

When will I receive notification of the decision made on my application?

Notification of admissions decisions is mailed by March 1 for students admitted to the
3 ½ year, M.Arch. I Program and by April 1 for students admitted to the 2-year M.Arch. I Program.

Does the Master of Architecture Program have a wait list?

Yes.  If the admissions committee considers your application competitive, and you were not offered admission during the initial review process, your name may be placed on a wait list for consideration in the event that space becomes available.

Are scholarships available through the Architecture Program?

The Architecture Program awards financial assistance only in the form of research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and fellowships.  The awards are very limited and are based on merit only.

How can I make sure that I am being considered for all possible fellowships and assistantships?

You should send the Architecture Program Office a letter indicating your interest and qualifications for these awards.  You may include the letter, in a separate envelope, with the package containing your portfolio.

If I am not offered a fellowship or assistantship, are there other ways that I may obtain assistance during my enrollment in the Architecture Program?

The Co-Op Program is an Institute initiative to enhance graduate education in architecture at Georgia Tech.  Students receive practical experience by working directly with firm professionals on current projects.  When a Co-Op student is placed, the Architecture Program appoints the student as a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA).  This appointment covers the student’s matriculation, providing significant financial support for the student.

Who is eligible for a Co-Op?
Graduate students, in good standing, in the 2nd year of the Graduate Program.
Can I do a Co-Op while I’m enrolled in the Master’s Project Studio?
The Architecture Program highly discourages students from participation in the Co-Op Program during the semester they are enrolled in the Master’s Project Studio.
After I complete the professional degree, what must I do to become a licensed architect?

Licensure requirements include a professional degree, a period of practical training (internship), and successful completion of all of the sections of the Architect Registration Examination (ARE).  Each state determines the specific requirements with regard to initial training, examination, and professional practice.  In Georgia, for example, a candidate for licensure is required to have a professional degree from  NAAB-accredited program and three (3) years of acceptable IDP (Intern Development Program) training to be qualified to sit for the Architect Registration Examination.  Student may initiate the IDP process prior to graduation.
