Alan Balfour, Dean and Professor
Alan Balfour joined the College of Archtiecture as its new Dean in July of 2008.
Most recently dean of the School of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, N.Y., Balfour was previously the director of the Architecture Program at Georgia Tech from 1977 to 1987. Balfour received his education at the Edinburgh College of Art and Princeton University.
Douglas C. Allen, Professor and Senior Associate Dean
Doug Allen joined the Architecture Program as an Assistant Professor in 1977, promoted to Associate Professor in 1982 and Professor in 1989. He was appointed as Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs in July 2002. He received his Master of Landscape Architecture from Harvard University in 1976.
Sabir Khan, Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies
Sabir Khan joined the Architecture Program in 1995 as an Assistant Professor, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2001 and again to Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Creative Activity in July 2002. Sabir received a Master of Architecture from Rice University in 1987.
Steven P. French, Ph.D., FAICP, Professor and Associate Dean for Research
Steve French joined the City and Regional Planning Program in January 1992. He received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1980.
Leslie Sharp, PhD, Assistant Dean for Academic Administration and Outreach
Leslie Sharp joined the College in 2003 and currently oversees outreach initiatives. Her PhD is in History of Technology from Georgia Tech and her research intertwines historic preservation, gender, and architecture.
Frank Clark, PhD, Professor and Director of the Music Department
Frank Clark joined the Music Department as Professor and Director in 2002. He received his PhD in 1990 from the University of Arizona.
George B. Johnston, PhD, Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in Architecture
George Johnston joined the Architecture Program in 1984. Johnston previously held positions of Associate Director and Interim Director of the Architecture Program, and currently teaches courses in architectural design and in the history and theory of architectural practice. He received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Emory University in 2006 in the area of American Cultural History.
Roozbeh Kangari, PhD, Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in Building Construction
Roozbeh Kangari joined Georgia Tech in 1982 as an Assistant Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He was appointed as the Director of the Building Construction Program in 1996. He earned his PhD in 1982 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
John Peponis, PhD, Professor and Director of Post-Professional and PhD Degrees in Architecture
John Peponis received his Ph.D. degree in Architecture from the University of London in 1983 and is a registered architect in Greece where he works with Kokkinou and Kourkoulas. He came to Georgia Tech in 1989.
Stephen Sprigle, PhD, Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in Industrial Design
A biomedical engineer, Dr. Sprigle holds appointments in both industrial design and applied physiology, as well as being a principal researcher in the Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access (CATEA). He brings to this position substantial engineering design knowledge and a strong research agenda in disability and rehabilitation technologies.
Bruce Stiftel, PhD, Director of Graduate Studies in City & Regional Planning
Bruce Stiftel joined the City & Regional Planning Program as its Director in August 2008. Chair of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning’s Committee on the Academy and the Profession, and Review Editor of the journal Planning Theory, he earned his PhD from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1986 and taught previously at Florida State University.
Gil Weinberg, Director of Music Technology at Georgia Institute of Technology
Gil Weinberg holds professorship positions in the Music Department and the College of Computation. Weinberg received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Media Arts and Sciences from MIT, after co-founding and holding positions in the music and media software industry in his home country of Israel.
Karl N. Brohammer, Director of the Advanced Wood Products Laboratory (AWPL)
Karl Brohammer joined the College of Architecture in May 1999 as the Center for Rehabilitation Technology (CRT) Project Manager for the Advanced Wood Products Laboratory Project. He has since served as the Assistant AWPL Director and was appointed AWPL Director in January 2002. Prior to his current position Brohammer worked in the forest products industry in the Southeast and holds degrees in Forestry and Business from Louisiana Tech University.

Steve French joined the City and Regional Planning Program in January 1992. He received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1980.
Anatoliusz "Tolek" Lesniewski, PhD, Senior Academic Professional and Director of the IMAGINE Lab.
Tolek Lesniewski joined the College of Architecture as a Visiting Professor in 1984 and in 1985 became a Research Engineer 2. His interest and work in "new media" led to the creation of the IMAGINE Lab. He earned both his Master and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Warsaw University of Technology.
Catherine L. Ross, Director of the Center for Quality Growth and Regional Development (CQGRD) and Harry West Professor
Catherine Ross joined the City and Regional Planning Program in 1977. She earned her Master of Regional Planning Degree and the PhD in City and Regional Planning from Cornell University in 1979. She completed post-doctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley and was appointed full Professor in 1990. Prior to her current position, she organized and served as the first Executive Director of the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA).
Jon Sanford, Director of the Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access (CATEA)
Jon Sanford first joined the College in 1981 as a Research Scientist I and served in that capacity until 1988. He returned to CATEA in November 2002 as a Senior Research Scientist. He was appointed the Director of the Center for Assistive Technology and Environmental Access in August 2008.

Norma Denuex, Assistant to the Dean
Norma joined the College of Architecture in August 1992. Since that time, she has worked in the Office of Administration and Finance where she gained an excellent working knowledge of the college
Robert Gerhart, Director, Information Technology
Robert Gerhart joined the College of Architecture in 1999 and is responsible for leading the strategic direction and implementation of information systems among the college’s thirteen academic programs and research centers. Prior to coming to Georgia Tech, Robert worked as a technical professional for 14 years in the business and government sectors.
Linda McBride, Director, Administration and Finance
Linda McBride joined the college in April 2007. She came from the office of the Executive Vice President for Administration & Finance where she worked since 1995 as the Executive Assistant to Mr. Robert Thompson. Linda holds a BS in Accounting and began her career at Georgia Tech in 1979.
Teri Nagel, Communications Officer
Teri Nagel serves to enhance the reputation of the College of Architecture through media relations, publications, and brand management. Nagel brings to the College corporate public relations and marketing experience, including agency work supporting major clients such as UPS and Shaw. Most recently, she was communications officer in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She received a BS in Industrial Design from Georgia Tech.
Joanie Chembars, Webmaster
Joanie Chembars joined the College of Architecture in 1995. She maintains the college level webpages and works with some of the units in the college to develop their pages. Joanie received a BS in Industrial Design from Georgia Tech.
